University of Salamanca
Universidad De Salamanca, Salamanca, SpainGeneral Information
University of Salamanca (USAL), founded in 1218, is one of the three oldest universities in Europe, boasting a wide range of Faculties and Research Institutes in Sciences and Arts. Today, USAL offers a wide range of studies to about 26,000 pre-graduate and 2,600 post-graduate students per year. It contracts 3,200 researchers grouped in 64 University Departments, 16 Faculties, 10 University Schools and 12 Research Institutes, including the Institute for Biomedical Research (IBSAL) where basic, clinical and translational biomedical research activities of USAL, the University Hospital of Salamanca and the National Research Council (CSIC) are integrated in a Centre of Excellence.
Our research group focuses on the study of early manifestations of autism and its neurobiological correlates, identifying abnormalities in neuropsychological functioning, as well as in communication, social and emotional difficulties. Since 2005, our group has maintained a population-based program for the early detection of autism, validating various tools for detection in Spanish as well as a procedure implemented in the public health services, which has resulted in nearly 25,000 children participating in the program. Now we have started the following a cohort of preterm infants and typically developing controls in longitudinal studies where we use observational measures, cognitive measures and electroencephalography (EEG).
Role in AIMS-2-TRIALS
USAL will be integrated into the European Clinical Research Network, collaborating in the planned actions to achieve the high-quality training necessary to carry out clinical trials, participating in face-to-face workshops and webinars. Likewise, we will collaborate in the implementation and standardization of management systems and data collection for clinical trials including providing information on the recruitment of patients, the quality of the data, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) compliance. Likewise, in collaboration with the Zamora Healthcare Campus and the Rio Hortega University Hospital in Valladolid, we will participate in the development of the planned clinical trial(s) within with a new medicine, using a stratified medicine approach with pre-existing and / or novel markers identified in the Biomarkers in Autism project. Together with the rest of the partners we will assist and participate in coordination of meetings and activities and in the Educational Program about autism which includes European regional meetings.
